Middle Tennessee State University Suggested Language for Will Bequests

A will bequest can direct a specific sum of money to be distributed after the donor’s death and as his or her estate is settled, or the will may direct a certain percentage of the donor’s estate, or it could distribute the rest, residue, and remainder of one’s estate after the payment of bills, attorney’s fees, executor’s fees, or other expenses required to be paid.

Here are three examples of language for those purposes:

1. Distribution of a sum certain

I give, devise, and bequeath to the Middle Tennessee State University Foundation, a nonprofit Tennessee corporation with its principal office in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the sum of ____________________ dollars to be used _______________________________________________.

2. Distribution of a percentage of the donor’s estate

I give, devise, and bequeath to the Middle Tennessee State University Foundation, a nonprofit Tennessee corporation with its principal office in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, ________ percent (_____%) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate to be used ______________________________________________________________.

3. Distribution of the rest, residue, and remainder

I give, devise, and bequeath to the Middle Tennessee State University Foundation, a nonprofit Tennessee corporation with its principal office in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate to be used _______________________________________________.
